“The Private Sector is the Engine of Growth.”
These were the words of Secretary Arsenio Balisacan of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), spoken with conviction during the 48th Philippine Business Conference and Expo, held October 19–20, 2022 at The Manila Hotel. More than a thousand business leaders, policy-makers, and stakeholders gathered—not just to network or exchange business cards—but to engage in something deeper: a national conversation about the direction of our economy.

Observing this convergence of private sector ambition and public sector vision was both fascinating and telling. Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio opened the event, setting a tone of cooperation and resilience. Later, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. laid out the administration's economic strategies, attempting to bridge aspiration with policy, while assuring the business community of continuity and support.

Throughout the two days, the message was clear: if we are to build an economy that is sustainable, inclusive, and resilient, the private sector must not only participate—it must lead. But for that to happen, government must do more than govern. It must enable, facilitate, and provide the institutional foundations on which innovation and enterprise can flourish.

The agenda was rich: investment expansion, SME development, and job creation dominated discussions. Yet the deeper questions lingered—where do real opportunities lie under the current administration? What threats loom on the horizon? And, most importantly, how do we prepare ourselves now to avoid tomorrow’s economic pitfalls?

A key moment during the conference was the recognition of the Most Business-Friendly Local Government Units (LGUs) and Outstanding Chambers of Commerce—a reminder that real economic progress often starts not in national halls of power, but in the cities and municipalities where policies take root and businesses take risks.

Which brings me to Taytay, Rizal.

There was pride in the air when the call went out: SMILE TAYTAY NA! A bold vision is taking shape under Mayor Allan De Leon and LEDIPO ( Local Economic Development and Investment Promotion Office ) Led by Ms. Cristina “Chin” Gonzales —one that seeks to position Taytay as a frontrunner in business friendliness and local economic development. The message was clear: Next year, we’re not just participating—we’re competing. We’re coming home with that award.

As someone chronicling this journey, I find it compelling. The intersection of ambition, governance, and entrepreneurship is where the story of modern progress unfolds. And as Taytay sets its sights on becoming the next Most Business-Friendly Municipality, the narrative is far from over.

Padayon Tayo. The road ahead may be long, but the momentum is real—and so is the promise.
