From the Philippines to Tokyo: Filipino Karate Masters Earn Global Respect at Prestigious JKA Spring Camp
Historic Achievements Signal the Rising International Presence of Philippine Martial Arts Excellence
TOKYO, JAPAN - May 5, 2026 — In a world increasingly searching for discipline, resilience, and authentic human values, a powerful story emerged from Japan this spring as JKA Philippines captured international attention during the prestigious 2026 Spring Camp of the Japan Karate Association.
Among elite karate practitioners from around the globe, the Philippine delegation stood proudly—not merely as participants, but as rising leaders in the international martial arts community.
For many observers, the achievements of the Filipino delegation represented something far greater than rank promotions. They reflected the quiet but undeniable rise of the Philippines as a respected force in traditional karate on the world stage.
At the center of this historic moment were two Filipino masters officially recognized as 7th Dan (Nanadan) karatekas:
- Sensei Ruben Tinda-an from Northern Philippines
- Sensei Jullian Chees, originally from the Philippines and now based in Germany
Their elevation to one of the highest levels in traditional karate marks a milestone not only for Philippine martial arts, but also for the growing visibility of Asian excellence within the international sporting and cultural arena.
In Europe—where appreciation for discipline, heritage, and mastery continues to thrive—the recognition earned by these Filipino karate masters resonates deeply. Their journey reflects years of sacrifice, relentless training, humility, and unwavering commitment to the philosophy of karate-do.
The Spring Camp also reaffirmed the international trust placed upon the leadership of JKA Philippines.
Shihan Lito Luague, Chairman of JKA Philippines, alongside Sensei Khim Torres, Technical Director of the organization, successfully renewed their prestigious Special Dan Rights—an authority granted only to highly respected leaders permitted to conduct official Dan examinations under JKA standards.
Their continued recognition by JKA Headquarters in Japan reflects the confidence entrusted to Filipino leadership within one of the world’s most respected martial arts institutions.
The Philippine delegation’s success extended further as Sensei Cindy Torres earned her Instructor C and Judge C qualifications following rigorous evaluation by the elite JKA HQ Shihan-kai led by senior Japanese masters including Shuseki Shihan Oishi, Shihan Imamura, Shihan Shiina, Shihan Izumiya, and Shihan Imura.
At the same time, Sensei Kyla Tinda-an achieved Instructor D and Judge D certifications, symbolizing the emergence of a promising new generation prepared to continue the tradition of excellence internationally.
The delegation also recognized the important role of Sensei Raul Andaya, whose professionalism and representation strengthened the Philippine presence throughout the event.
For many Europeans following the evolution of global martial arts culture, the rise of JKA Philippines tells a compelling story: that excellence is no longer defined solely by geography or economic power, but by dedication, character, and vision.
In an age dominated by technology and rapid change, karate continues to preserve timeless values—respect, honor, discipline, and inner strength. The achievements of the Philippine delegation in Tokyo stand as a reminder that these values remain universal and profoundly relevant.
As international sports increasingly become bridges between cultures, the Philippines is proving that it can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s best—not only in talent, but in spirit.
And according to many within the JKA community, this is only the beginning.
