Illinois Democrat Gov. JB Pritzker is intensifying his anti-Trump rhetoric, calling for “disruption” in order to “castigate” and “punish” Republicans, and he’s drawing GOP pushback for it.
“Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now,” said Pritzker at a New Hampshire Democrat fundraiser on Sunday.
On Monday, White House adviser Stephen Miller said of Pritzker’s remarks: “His comments … could be construed as inciting violence … . This war that Democrat governors and mayors are waging against federal law enforcement, I mean, this is nullificationist behavior. This is secessionist behavior.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said in an X post Tuesday, “Dems are the party of chaos and are going to start a civil war over a secure border, reducing inflation, and cutting waste, fraud, and abuse.”
In his New Hampshire remarks, Pritzker—an heir to the Hyatt hotel chain fortune who has been governor of Illinois since 2019—said, “These Republicans cannot know a moment of peace. They have to understand that we will fight their cruelty with every microphone and megaphone that we have. We must castigate them on the soapbox and then punish them at the ballot box.”
Pritzker has previously sparred with the second Trump administration.
The Trump Department of Justice has named him as a defendant in its lawsuit against Illinois for not cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
Speaking to Biden administration White House press secretary Jen Psaki on her MSNBC show the day after his speech, Pritzker reiterated his fiery message and said that public demonstrations were necessary due to Republican control of Congress and the White House.
“When you don’t control Congress, when you don’t control the White House, and people are feeling helpless and powerless, it’s time for people to mobilize, and I wanted people to hear that they do have power,” Pritzker said.
As with other Democrats, the Illinois governor went so far as to compare America’s political situation to antisemitic pogroms in Eastern Europe and the government of Nazi Germany. Pritzker is the descendant of Jews who had to flee pogroms in Ukraine.
“The dangers that my family experienced in Ukraine, the dangers that we saw in Nazi Germany—especially in the earliest days of Nazi Germany—are the dangers that we need to react to now. If we don’t, things will get much, much worse,” he said.
